Glen Scotia Unveils Third Release in Icons of Campbeltown Series

Glen Scotia has announced the third expression in its acclaimed Icons of Campbeltown series — a five-part annual collection celebrating the people, legends, and spirit of Scotland’s historic whisky capital.

This latest release, the Icons of Campbeltown Release No.3: The Wulver, is a limited-edition unpeated 12-year-old single malt, finished in Tawny Port casks. It takes inspiration from the mythical Wulver — a wolf-headed, kind-hearted creature from Scottish folklore, known for his generosity and quiet strength.

The Icons of Campbeltown series draws inspiration from Campbeltown’s medieval market cross, a 14th-century monument adorned with carvings of saints, warriors, and beasts — symbols of the town’s history and imagination. Among these figures lies the Wulver, a mysterious figure believed to embody compassion and community spirit.

According to legend, the Wulver lived in a cave near the sea, fishing daily and leaving his catch on the windowsills of hungry neighbours — a tale that mirrors Campbeltown’s enduring generosity and resilience.

Craft and Character

Created by Master Blender Ashley Smith, this 12-year-old unpeated expression matured first in bourbon barrels before being finished for nine months in Tawny Port casks, developing a rich, layered flavour profile.

“For the third release in the series, I wanted to create something that matched the Wulver’s warmth and depth,” said Ashley Smith. “The Tawny Port casks bring flavours of red berries and dark chocolate, while the maritime notes keep the unmistakable Glen Scotia character.”

Distillery Manager and Master Distiller Iain McAlister added:

“The Wulver represents the generous heart of Campbeltown — a spirit still alive in our community today. This whisky pays tribute to that same resilience and kindness.”

To bring the legend to life visually, Glen Scotia once again partnered with artist John Holtzman (Disney, Marvel, Macmillan), whose illustration of the Wulver captures both the creature’s mystery and compassion.
