Bladnoch Distillery, Scotland’s oldest privately-owned distillery, has unveiled the second release in its special series Loch Maberry: Stories of Bladnoch — a collection that celebrates heritage, rediscovery, and personal connection to one of Scotland’s most historic distilleries.
Named after Loch Maberry, the source of the River Bladnoch, the series pays homage to the land and water that have sustained Bladnoch’s whiskymaking since 1817 — and to the people whose stories keep its spirit alive.
Chapter Two tells the story of Elizabeth Cobbett, great-great-granddaughter of founder Thomas McClelland, who co-established Bladnoch more than 200 years ago. Her journey of reconnection led her from family archives in Liverpool back to Galloway, where she rediscovered her family’s whisky-making legacy.
Working alongside Master Distiller Dr. Nick Savage, Elizabeth hand-selected Cask 450/2006, a sherry butt laid down in 2006, for this special release. The whisky offers rich notes of coffee, chocolate, and almonds, finishing long with nutty warmth.
“Before visiting Bladnoch, I never felt whisky was for me,” said Elizabeth. “But seeing the craft, patience, and artistry that go into making it completely changed that. I now understand why it’s called the ‘water of life’ — and I know my ancestors would be proud.”
Dr. Nick Savage added:
“Elizabeth’s story captures everything Loch Maberry represents — connection, heritage, and rediscovery. Like whisky itself, those bonds take time to mature.”
Following the 2024 debut that celebrated Bladnoch admirer Mr. Arnold, Chapter Two continues the series’ tribute to individuals whose lives intertwine with the distillery’s enduring legacy.
