The inaugural Port Charlotte Islay Single Malt bottling debuted in 2006, initially lacking age statements due to limited inventory. It wasn’t until 2018 that Port Charlotte released its first 10-year-old whisky, marking a significant milestone. Now, nearly six years later, Bruichladdich presents its oldest expression yet: the Port Charlotte 18 year old.
Cask Influence and Peat Levels
Crafted from 100% Scottish barley, like its 10-year-old counterpart, Port Charlotte 18 showcases a slightly different cask influence. While the 10-year-old matures in a combination of first-fill American whiskey barrels, second-fill American whiskey barrels, and second-fill French wine casks, the 18-year-old is aged predominantly in refill sherry casks and refill French oak wine casks to accentuate dried fruit and sweetness. Peated to 40 phenol parts per million (ppm), Port Charlotte 18 maintains the same peat level as its 10-year-old sibling, distinguishing itself from the higher ppm Octomore releases.
Revival and Innovation
Bottled at 54.3% ABV, Port Charlotte 18, distilled in 2004, represents a limited release of 6,000 bottles, embodying the culmination of Bruichladdich’s commitment to craftsmanship and innovation.
