Mackmyra Whisky Files for Bankruptcy

Swedish whisky producer Mackmyra Svensk Whisky AB has filed for bankruptcy, marking a significant moment in the brand’s 25-year history. Founded in 1999, Mackmyra has been a pioneer in the Swedish whisky scene, but despite efforts to secure the company’s future, the brand has now placed its operations in the hands of bankruptcy trustees.

The decision to file for bankruptcy was confirmed on August 19th at the Gävle District Court in Sweden. In a public statement, Mackmyra’s chairman, Petter Ski, expressed deep regret over the closure, highlighting the relentless efforts by the management and staff to overcome financial challenges. Ski noted, “Despite the fantastic work of both staff and management, it is still not possible to continue.

Since taking over as chairman just over a year ago, Ski, alongside a newly appointed management team, had been focused on finding a sustainable path forward for Mackmyra. However, the efforts proved insufficient given the time constraints. Ski remains hopeful that the bankruptcy trustee will find a way to preserve the brand and its legacy.

Acting CEO Patrick Björsjö echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the emotional impact of the decision on employees, loyal customers, and brand ambassadors. The timing of the bankruptcy, coinciding with the company’s 25th anniversary, adds to the poignancy of the situation. Björsjö commented on the recent progress Mackmyra had made toward profitability, making the decision even more regrettable.

The bankruptcy filing comes just a week after Mackmyra had appointed Summerton Whisky Club as its new UK distributor. The partnership was set to launch an updated core range, featuring the brand’s Svensk Ek and Svensk Rök single malts in a new 700ml format, marking Mackmyra’s return to the UK market. However, the brand had already suspended all sales to the UK market as of March 2024, following the end of its previous distribution agreement with Craftwork.

As the company now enters bankruptcy proceedings, the future of the Mackmyra brand remains uncertain. Fans and industry watchers alike will be keen to see whether the brand’s 25-year legacy can be preserved through the process.
