Jackton Distillery has implemented a blockchain-backed cask management system as part of a wider move towards greater transparency and traceability in whisky production and cask ownership.
The family-run distillery, known for its Raer Scotch Whisky range, has partnered with Proof 8 to introduce Digital Deeds—secure, verifiable records assigned to every cask. Each deed is linked via a QR code and records the full lifecycle of a cask, including provenance, ownership, and location.

The move comes amid ongoing concerns around cask investment fraud, with producers increasingly exploring technology-led solutions to provide verifiable proof of authenticity.
According to Managing Director Jaynie Kean, the system reflects a shift in expectations among modern cask buyers, who are seeking clear, tamper-proof documentation rather than traditional paper certificates.
Founded in South Lanarkshire, Jackton has been in operation since 2020 and is developing a farm-to-glass production model, including growing its own barley and working towards on-site malting. The distillery has also adopted extended fermentation times, contributing to its developing house style.
Beyond traceability, the introduction of Proof 8 has significantly improved operational efficiency. The distillery reports a 75% reduction in cask management administration, with processes such as HMRC reporting reduced from several hours to around one hour per month.
Head of Operations Max McAneny noted that real-time data capture and a centralised system have replaced multiple manual workflows, allowing the team to focus more on production and maturation rather than administrative tasks.
The platform also enables cask owners to track their whisky over time, offering a more transparent and interactive ownership experience—an approach that is becoming increasingly relevant as global interest in cask investment continues to grow.
As younger distilleries enter the Scotch whisky sector, Jackton’s adoption of digital infrastructure highlights a broader trend: combining traditional whisky-making practices with modern data-driven systems to build trust and scalability in a competitive market.
