Charles Leclerc and Hikaru Nakamura face off in Chivas Regal showdown

Charles Leclerc and chess Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura went head-to-head in a high-stakes, one-of-a-kind showdown at the Chivas Regal Arena of Mastery, ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix in Monza.

Brought together by Chivas Regal, the unlikely rivals from Formula 1 and chess faced off in front of a live audience, turning the idea of mastery into a spectacular contest where every move mattered.

The event celebrated two creations born from the same mindset: Chivas Regal 16 Year Old, Leclerc’s debut co-created whisky, and SE!ZE, his bespoke chess-inspired game. Both are built around the belief that success comes from deliberate choices, with every decision carrying weight.

From the bottle to the board

The connection between the whisky and the game goes beyond their creator. Chivas Regal 16 Year Old brings together sixteen carefully selected whiskies, each aged for at least sixteen years. Among the deliberate choices behind the blend is Longmorn Single Malt matured in sherry casks, selected by Leclerc as the whisky’s signature component.

That same philosophy shapes SE!ZE, where players must make fast, precise decisions and where nothing is left to chance.

The result is a shared DNA built around one central idea: true mastery is never accidental.

At the Chivas Regal Arena of Mastery, fans watched as two elite competitors from completely different disciplines confronted each other across a single board. Every move generated a reaction, while the pressure of the live crowd added another dimension to the challenge.

For Leclerc, the experience was a chance to test himself in unfamiliar territory.

“SE!ZE and Chivas Regal 16 are built on the same idea: that every choice matters and nothing happens by accident,” said Charles Leclerc, Global Brand Ambassador for Chivas Regal. “Facing one of the greatest strategic minds in the world at my own game brought that to life in a way I hadn’t anticipated.”

The showdown also highlighted the thinking behind Chivas Regal 16 Year Old, which Leclerc co-created with Master Blender Sandy Hyslop, drawing inspiration from the number that has become synonymous with the Ferrari driver.

Nakamura, meanwhile, welcomed the opportunity to step outside the traditional chess arena and take on a completely different kind of opponent.

“Charles and Chivas Regal built a game that keeps you on edge from the first move: fast, precise, with no margin for error and where every decision matters,” said Chess Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura. “True mastery isn’t just about knowing the game, it’s about how you handle the pressure when it counts.”

The showdown was livestreamed on Chivas Regal’s YouTube channel, offering audiences a glimpse of mastery beyond its usual arena — and demonstrating how the mindset behind the brand can translate from whisky-making to competition, strategy and the pressure of the moment.

Chivas Regal 16 Year Old is available on Amazon, with an RRP of £64.00 / $69.99. SE!ZE will be available to play digitally later this year.
