Ardbeg has unveiled a rare and intensely sherried limited edition created exclusively for The Whisky Club. Ardbeg Dark Reserve is one of the darkest-ever Ardbegs, bringing together whisky matured in rare black sherry casks with classic Ardbeg bourbon-matured spirit.
Created for whisky lovers in Australia and New Zealand, the new expression delivers a rich and smoky profile built around treacle toffee, walnuts, earthy charcoal and spice.
A darker side of Ardbeg
Ardbeg has spent more than two centuries developing its unmistakable smoky style, while continuing to experiment with different maturation techniques. Dark Reserve takes inspiration from the much-loved Ardbeg Dark Cove, released for Ardbeg Day in 2016 and also created using black sherry casks.
For Dark Reserve, Ardbeg has created a marriage of whiskies wholly matured in black sherry and classic bourbon casks, followed by a finish in black sherry casks described as the darkest and most intense sherry casks ever used at Ardbeg.
Black sherry is produced using a process similar to Pedro Ximénez sherry, with grapes sun-dried to concentrate their deep, sweet flavours. The resulting casks bring exceptional depth and colour to the whisky.
The influence of the casks is immediately apparent, layering rich notes of molasses, nuts, dates, ginger and clove over Ardbeg’s signature peat smoke and charcoal.
Bottled at 49.4% ABV, just shy of cask strength, Dark Reserve is designed to preserve and amplify its bold character.
A whisky made for Ardbeg fans Down Under
Ardbeg Master Blender Gillian Macdonald describes the release as a whisky of “smouldering intensity”, combining bourbon-matured Ardbeg with spirit aged in the rare black sherry casks.
The flavour profile brings together Muscovado sugar, aromatic ginger and smoked paprika, alongside nutty, earthy notes and waves of rich smoke.
For The Whisky Club, the release represents a particularly significant collaboration. According to General Manager Seamus Carroll, the supercharged sherry casks come from a single bodega, giving both teams the opportunity to build a whisky specifically around their character.
Australia and New Zealand are home to some of Ardbeg’s most devoted fans, making the region a natural home for this highly limited release.
Ardbeg Dark Reserve will be available exclusively to The Whisky Club members in Australia and New Zealand from 2 October 2026, priced at $150 AUD / $145 NZD.
Before the official release, the whisky will receive a sneak preview at Ardbeg Embassies from 24 September, with exclusive complimentary tasting opportunities for Whisky Club and Ardbeg Committee members.
With its combination of rare black sherry casks, near-cask-strength bottling and classic Islay smoke, Dark Reserve offers a particularly dark and decadent interpretation of the Ardbeg style.
