Ardbeg has completed its ultra-rare Vintage_Y2K series with its oldest and rarest release yet: Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 25 Years Old.
Distilled during a defining moment in the history of the Islay distillery, the new whisky brings together spirit from the historic 51-year-old Ardbeg still, which was retired in 2001, with a finishing technique used at the distillery for the first time: Spanish Tempranillo wine casks.
A whisky born from Ardbeg’s revival
The year 2000 marked a major turning point for Ardbeg. After being saved from closure in 1997 and subsequently renovated, the distillery finally returned to full production in 2000.
The three whiskies in the Vintage_Y2K series were created from spirit distilled during this period of regeneration. Each combines Ardbeg’s historic character with experimental whisky-making techniques, resulting in a series of particularly unusual and limited expressions.
The 25-year-old is the final and most exclusive release in the series, following the Vintage_Y2K 23 Years Old and 24 Years Old.
First Ardbeg aged in Tempranillo casks
Initially matured in classic bourbon casks, the whisky was selected by Ardbeg’s Director of Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden for an unconventional secondary maturation.
The spirit was transferred into Tempranillo red wine casks from Bodega Numanthia in north-west Spain, marking the first use of these casks at Ardbeg.
The estate is known for its ancient vines and intensely flavoured wines, creating a fitting partner for Ardbeg’s equally distinctive spirit.
The resulting whisky combines peat smoke and sweet chilli with rich notes of coffee, smoked fruit and barbecue ribs, enhanced by a custom bottling strength of 48% ABV.
Dr Bill Lumsden describes the release as a fitting finale to the series, with aromas of chilli chocolate, smoked blackcurrants and paprika, followed by flavours of coffee, spare ribs, menthol and lime pickle.
“The oldest and rarest release of the series yet, Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 25 Years Old is a fitting finale,” said Dr Bill Lumsden. “Crafted from some of the final spirit distilled in our historic still, then finished in Bodega Numanthia’s intensely flavoured Tempranillo red wine casks, it celebrates both Ardbeg’s enduring character and its restless spirit of innovation.”

Collectors looking to complete the series can still find the remaining bottles of the first two releases.
Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 23 Years Old is a citrussy and sooty expression matured in bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks.
Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 24 Years Old is a more delicate whisky aged in bourbon and Amontillado sherry casks, another first for Ardbeg.
With the arrival of the 25-year-old, the Vintage_Y2K series now forms a three-part celebration of the distillery’s return to production at the turn of the millennium.
