Buffalo Trace Distillery has announced the latest addition to its Experimental Collection, a whiskey that incorporates hops—a key ingredient in beer production—into the distillation process.
Spirits Distilled from Grain and Hops, created by master distiller Harlen Wheatley, explores how hops influence a whiskey’s final flavor profile. Inspired by bitter beers with floral aromas, Wheatley selected two hop varieties: Saaz noble hops, commonly found in Bohemian pilsners, and Zythos, an American hop known for tropical and herbal notes. These hops were infused into the raw distillate for 30 minutes before undergoing redistillation and maturation in charred white oak casks for 11 years and seven months.
Bottled at 45% ABV, the whiskey presents hoppy aromas of citrus and herbal notes, complemented by creamy vanilla and seasoned oak undertones. On the palate, it offers vibrant citrus flavors, including lemon and orange zest, fresh herbal notes, and a balanced oak presence.
“Hoppy beers are a playground for brewers; there are many techniques used to capture different flavors,” Wheatley explained. “It inspired us to play around with this essential beer ingredient as well. Thanks to the more than 11 years of aging, the hop aroma and hop flavors are evident while providing a balanced bitterness that blends well with the spirit’s oaky whiskey character.”
Wheatley suggests enjoying the whiskey neat but encourages experimentation in cocktails, recommending it as an alternative base for a Manhattan.
Buffalo Trace Experimental Spirits Distilled from Grain and Hops will be available in limited quantities at the Buffalo Trace Distillery gift shop starting in late January 2025. The release is priced at $46.99 for a 375ml bottle.
Legacy of Experimentation
Buffalo Trace has been conducting whiskey experiments for over two decades, with more than 30,000 experimental barrels stored at the distillery. Each experiment explores different variables, such as mash bills, barrel types, and aging conditions. Only select experiments make it to market, with releases offered in limited batches.
This latest expression exemplifies Buffalo Trace’s ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of whiskey-making while honoring tradition.
