Ireland’s Boann Distillery has played a central role in creating ‘1888’, a new luxury blended whisky released in celebration of the British & Irish Lions and their enduring legacy.
Named after the year of the Lions’ founding, 1888 is a rare blend of grains and malts from five distilleries across the four home nations:
- Boann (Ireland)
- Echlinville (Northern Ireland)
- Cameronbridge (Scotland)
- White Peak (England)
- Penderyn (Wales)
Each distillery contributes unique character to this cross-nation collaboration, resulting in a whisky that reflects unity, heritage, and exceptional craftsmanship.
Just 1,888 individually numbered bottles of 1888 have been released, offering rugby and whisky fans a collectible piece of Lions history. The release coincides with Patron Saint Whisky being appointed as an Official Supplier to the Lions Men’s Team for their 2025 tour of Australia.

Crafted using a variety of premium casks – including Oloroso Sherry, Mourvèdre, Red Wine, and First-fill Bourbon – 1888 delivers a rich tasting experience.
- Nose: sweet vanilla, citrus, baked fruit
- Palate: summer berries, butterscotch, lightly toasted nuts
The Lions’ 2025 tour kicked off with a home fixture in Dublin on June 20, and continues this month in Australia, with the first Test against the Wallabies taking place on July 19.
Lions legends John Rutherford and Craig Chalmers have endorsed the whisky, calling it a fitting tribute to the team’s legacy.
