Redbreast unveils Moscatel Wine Cask Edition

The fifth iteration of the celebrated Redbreast Iberian Series has arrived, finished in Moscatel wine casks from the hills of southern Spain, imparting a distinctly sun-soaked character to the iconic Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.

Crafted by Master Blender David McCabe, Redbreast Moscatel Wine Cask Edition honours the brand’s rich heritage while embracing innovation. The whiskey is initially matured in a combination of ex-American whiskey casks and Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, before undergoing a final 16-month maturation in Málaga Moscatel wine casks sourced from Bodegas Quitapenas. It is bottled at 46% ABV.

This Mediterranean-inspired expression brings a noticeably elegant and citrus-forward profile to the Iberian Series, showcasing Redbreast’s long-standing relationship with fortified wine casks.

Over several decades, McCabe and former Master Blender Billy Leighton cultivated close partnerships with winemakers and coopers across the Iberian Peninsula. For this release, Midleton Distillery collaborated with Bodegas Quitapenas in Málaga, now led by fifth-generation custodians Marta Suárez Prieto and Víctor Suárez Onrubia. Specially selected European oak hogsheads were seasoned with Moscatel wine for two years before being filled with a bespoke batch of Redbreast at Midleton Distillery.

The flavour journey opens with notes of fresh tangerine and twisted orange peel, layered with delicate herbal tones of chamomile tea, nutmeg and cedarwood. The wine-seasoned oak introduces vanilla, floral honey and sugar-glazed fruits, while classic pot still spices bring subtle hints of black peppercorn and clove.

Speaking about the launch, David McCabe said: “The launch of Redbreast Moscatel Wine Cask Edition is a celebration of Redbreast’s heritage, craftsmanship, and incredible legacy dating back to the late 1800s. The use of Spanish Moscatel-seasoned casks is a tribute to Redbreast’s historic ties to sherry and fortified wines, and to the remarkable people behind them.

Marta Suárez Prieto added: “It has been a great honour to collaborate on this release, which pays tribute to our family history. We have taken great care to season the casks perfectly, ensuring the whiskey is infused with flavours of sweet honey, dates and caramelised fruits alongside gentle herbal, floral and citrus tones.”
