Port Ellen Distillery has announced the release of a 42-Year-Old Single Malt in celebration of its 200th anniversary.
This is the first limited release since the reopening of Port Ellen, originally distilled in 1983, just before the distillery fell silent. The whisky was matured for 42 years in European oak casks and bottled on August 14, 2025 at 52.5% ABV.
Official tasting notes for the Port Ellen 200th Anniversary Edition:
- Nose: Wonderfully complex, with intensifying smoke character and luscious berry notes. A wisp of wood smoke laces through fading embers and aromatic medicinal tones. Confectionary fruits emerge with cranberries and red currants, alongside hints of dark brown sugar, soft spices, raisins, and plum.
- Body: Full-bodied, unctuous character.
- Palate: Fragrant wood smoke with spice, balanced by caramelised brown sugars, red berries, and red apple skin. Wood polish, glowing embers and stewed plum surface and linger.
- Finish: Long, smoky fade with traces of black peppercorn and baking brambles.
The Port Ellen 200th Anniversary Edition is limited to 150 bottles and will be available from October 2025, exclusively through the distillery on Islay and by enquiring with the private client team in Scotland via diageorareandexceptional.com.
The release carries a recommended retail price of £7,500.
For those visiting the distillery, the 200th Anniversary Edition will also be featured in a commemorative tasting experience launching in October.
