Last month, Mortlach also revealed a trio of whiskies as part of the L’Evolution Collection, designed by the renowned creative mind Philippe Starck, adding yet another innovative chapter to the distillery’s storied history.
Mortlach, a prestigious Speyside distillery under the Diageo umbrella, has released its oldest and most exclusive whisky to date: a 50-year-old single malt. This ultra-rare expression is the final addition to Mortlach’s revered Singing Stills series, and it’s limited to just 60 bottles worldwide, each priced at an eye-watering $30,000.
The whisky comes from a single refill American oak hogshead cask, which remained undisturbed for five decades in Mortlach’s original warehouse. This extended maturation process allowed the whisky to take a “slow journey of refinement,” showcasing the distillery’s long-standing expertise in creating bold and complex flavors.
Using Mortlach’s signature 2.81-time distillation and its original direct-fire stills, this 50-year-old whisky offers a luxurious balance of richness and sweetness, with layers of vibrant fruit and warming spice.
Dr. Craig Wilson, Mortlach’s master blender, reflected on the special nature of this release: “The 50-year maturation brought out the very essence of Mortlach’s distinctive umami character. It surpassed every expectation, showcasing both the distillery’s wild nature and the impact of time on this extraordinary whisky.“
Now available globally, Mortlach’s 50-Year-Old Single Malt carries a suggested retail price of $30,000 (€27,450/£23,000) , making it one of the most coveted bottles on the market for collectors and connoisseurs alike.
