Loch Lomond Distillery has just released an exclusive single malt whisky, with only 100 individually numbered bottles available worldwide. This rare release, distilled in 1973, showcases the distillery’s unique craftsmanship and innovative distillation techniques.
A Rare Masterpiece
Distilled using Loch Lomond’s distinctive straight-neck pot stills and 100% unpeated malted barley, this exceptional whisky has undergone a remarkable maturation journey. Initially aged in American oak casks, it then spent time in first-fill bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry hogsheads, resulting in a complex and deeply flavorful single malt.
The Master Distiller’s Vision
Michael Henry, the master distiller at Loch Lomond Group since 2007, has meticulously overseen the maturation process of this extraordinary whisky. Reflecting on the release, Henry remarked, “Loch Lomond 50 Year Old is a rare example of our timeless distillation innovation. The decision to re-cask a whisky of this quality and age is not something I take lightly. The complexity and depth of flavor brought by the first-fill bourbon and the Oloroso sherry casks have made this a truly special single malt, capturing the original style of whisky making at Loch Lomond Distillery.“
A Journey Through Flavor
The whisky’s light character is highlighted by notes of white flesh fruits, citrus, and a hint of tropical undertones. Six years in bourbon casks have imparted a creamy vanilla touch, while the subsequent maturation in Oloroso sherry casks has added rich notes of nutmeg and a lingering woody spice. Bottled at a cask strength of 42.6% ABV, this non-chill-filtered whisky retains its natural color, ensuring an authentic and unaltered flavor experience.
