Killowen Distillery has announced a charity auction for its latest release, Killowen Barántúil – Cask #KD056 Threshing Oats, with all proceeds supporting the Southern Area Hospice. This limited-edition bottling consists of just 88 bottles, which will be auctioned exclusively through Irish Whiskey Auctions from February 12th to February 14th, 2025.
The story behind this release is deeply rooted in community and tradition. The oats used in the mash bill were sourced from the Rostrevor & District Vintage Club and harvested at their Annual Threshing Day, an event dedicated to raising funds for the hospice. Grown on the slopes of Knock Shee, just near the distillery, these oats were cultivated by a group of individuals who actively support the hospice. Five years ago, the club donated these oats to Killowen, and now, after maturation, they return in whiskey form to once again raise funds for the same cause.
This oat-led whiskey is not designed to be a traditional pot still expression but instead stands as a distinctive style of its own. While an initial attempt at a 100% oaten mash bill proved challenging due to low yields, Killowen developed a balanced mash bill that maximized the presence of oats while delivering a complex flavour profile. The whiskey was matured in a 50-litre Ex-Kentucky Rye Firkin, which had been recouped and re-charred to a medium toast before filling.
Just two weeks shy of five years old, this whiskey is described as viscous, complex, and balanced, with creaminess at the forefront, followed by warming rye spice and a subtle hint of peat. The result is a layered mouthfeel and evolving flavours that invite repeated exploration.
With demand expected to be high, those interested in securing a bottle should participate in the auction between February 12th and February 14th, 2025, when bidding goes live at 5 PM on Wednesday, February 12th via Irish Whiskey Auctions.
