Highland Park has introduced its oldest whisky to date, a 56-year-old single malt available in just 170 bottles priced at £40,000. This release follows the brand’s 54-year-old whisky from 2023 and comes from a unique cask that has never been tasted before.
The whisky was first matured in 1968 and later re-casked in first-fill Sherry-seasoned barrels. Gordon Motion, Highland Park’s Master Whisky Maker, identified these exceptional casks during his first year in the role and saw their potential for creating something remarkable.
The whisky features Highland Park’s signature Orkney heathered peat, adding a subtle smokiness while maintaining a vibrant character. Its tasting notes include jasmine, lilac, sweet raisins, and cloudy honey on the nose, with flavors of Seville orange peel, coriander seeds, and lapsang souchong tea. Despite its age, the whisky avoids overpowering woodiness and delivers a well-balanced profile.
The bottle design and presentation case take inspiration from the Standing Stones of Stenness on Orkney. Crafted by John Galvin and Michael Rudak, the decanter and case reflect the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the islands, combining craftsmanship and modern design.
