Gold Spot’s latest addition, aged for thirteen years, continues its pioneering journey by incorporating wine casks in whiskey-making, bridging tradition with innovation. This exceptional expression harmonizes Gold Spot’s signature ex-bourbon and ex-sherry cask influence with a distinctive maturation in Valpolicella Classica Italian wine casks for 16 months. The final maturation infuses subtle spice notes with layers of dark fruits, berry compote, and a velvety sweetness, culminating in a nuanced finish of oak and sweet wine. This unique fusion of Irish whiskey and Italian wine celebrates the remarkable Mitchell family’s seven generations, custodians of Spot Whiskey and esteemed members of Ireland’s premier wine families.
A Legacy of Bonding and Blending
The Mitchell family’s whiskey bonding legacy traces back to the 1800s when empty wine and fortified wine casks journeyed to the local Jameson Distillery in Bow Street. Filled with new single pot still spirit and matured in underground cellars, these casks bore a daub or ‘spot’ of coloured paint, signifying the whiskey’s age and inspiring the cherished name of this coveted bottled whiskey.
A Toast to Generations of Expertise
In homage to generational winemaking, this expression matures in Italian wine casks sourced from Valpolicella Classica, selected from the Secondo Marco winery. Founded by Marco Speri, whose passion stems from his family’s oenological heritage spanning seven generations, Secondo Marco’s casks infuse Gold Spot with distinctive floral, spicy, and wine-driven notes. With both families boasting centuries of expertise, Gold Spot The Generations Edition celebrates a legacy of dedication to wine and whiskey, honoring their enduring contributions to the world of spirits.
Gold Spot Official Tasting Notes
Nose
Red apples and dark fleshy fruits at first, accompanied by fragrant blossom notes with sweet and woody undertones. Spices of clove and light dustings of nutmeg along with subtle hints of almond slowly come to the fore, complementing the fruits.
Taste
Luscious and sweet with generous servings of red berry compote, toffee apple and raisin. The wine seasoned casks and oak continue to impart delicate tannins, working in tandem with the pot still spices and fruits, while the sweetness adds further intricate flavours, balancing this wonderfully intriguing whiskey.
Finish
Lingering finish which sees the oak slowly fading, allowing the sweet wine and pot still spices to have the last word.
