Holyrood Distillery unveiled its second whisky, named Embra, as reported by Whisky Magazine. Set to release on Friday 19th of March, this whisky marks the brand’s debut into peated single malt territory, crafted from a unique blend of ingredients including chocolate malt, heavily peated malt, and passion fruit wine yeast.
Embracing Innovation and Flavor
“Experimentation and innovation are at the core of our ethos at Holyrood Distillery, aimed at crafting exceptional, intriguing, and flavorful spirits,” stated Holyrood Distillery Manager Calum Rae, as reported by Whisky Magazine.
Established in 2019, Holyrood Distillery embarked on a journey of exploration, culminating in the release of its first aged whisky, Arrival, in 2023, according to Whisky Magazine. The distillery prides itself on its focus on small-batch releases, prioritizing creativity over a standardized core program.
The bottle design of Embra draws inspiration from St. Leonard, the patron saint of barrel makers.
Crafting Accessibility and Complexity
Embra’s production process emphasizes accessibility without compromising on complexity. Calum Rae elaborates, “Edinburgh is a gateway to Scotland for many people, and this is the idea at the heart of the first of this series. Embra is triple cask matured with a variety of yeasts and malts including chocolate malt, heavily peated malt, and passion fruit wine yeast. This combination creates the perfect balance of bold smoky flavors and textures of a peated whisky, while still being accessible to a new whisky drinker,” as reported by Whisky Magazine.
Aroma and Flavor Profile
According to the brand, Embra presents a captivating bouquet and palate, featuring notes of lemon zest, hickory smoke, stewed pears, and dark chocolate mousse.
Embra will be available from Friday 15 March via specialist whisky retailers and Holyrood’s website.
