Glenfarclas Distillery has announced its oldest release to date: Glenfarclas 70 Year Old, a rare single malt distilled on November 20, 1953, and matured for seven decades in first-fill Sherry casks. Bottled at 42.9% ABV, this release is limited to just 262 bottles worldwide.
The whisky was distilled in an era when Glenfarclas still operated traditional malt floors—now converted into the tun room—and matured under the care of six different distillery managers, across generations of the Grant family.
The 70 Year Old reveals a deep dark teak hue, with a nose of stewed fruits and a hint of Speyside peat. The palate offers rich layers of dark chocolate, spiced dried fruits, treacle toffee, and deep coffee notes.
John Grant, current chairman and fifth-generation family member to lead the distillery, commented:
“Releasing it now marks a true milestone—one that Callum and I have considered carefully and with great respect for its legacy. We take immense pride in preserving Glenfarclas’ traditional production methods, including our direct-fired stills, which shape the bold and full-bodied style we’re known for.”
With only 262 bottles available, the Glenfarclas 70 Year Old will launch later this month via select specialist retailers at an RRP of £20,000.
