Buffalo Trace Distillery has announced the release of the third edition of its Prohibition Collection, an annual limited-edition set paying tribute to the whiskeys that were legally produced and sold during the Prohibition era at the historic George T. Stagg Distillery.
Between 1920 and 1933, alcohol production and sales were prohibited in the United States under the 18th Amendment, with medicinal whiskey available only by prescription. During this period, just six distilleries were licensed to bottle medicinal whiskey, including the George T. Stagg Distillery—known today as Buffalo Trace—the longest continuously operating distillery in America.
Five Forgotten Brands Return
The 2026 Prohibition Collection revives five historic whiskey brands that disappeared after Prohibition, each recreated with its own unique mash bill and character.
Henry Watterson
A tribute to the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and outspoken opponent of Prohibition, this uncut and unfiltered Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey is bottled at a powerful 140.6 proof. It delivers bold rye spice, citrus peel, fresh herbs and a long, dry finish.
Kentucky River
Inspired by the historic Kentucky River Distillery and Albert Blanton’s legacy, this 100 proof blend of Kentucky Straight Whiskeys offers notes of honeyed grain, vanilla, baked apple and caramelised sugar with a smooth, pastry-like finish.
John G. Carlisle
Named after one of the architects of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, this 100 proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon combines caramel, toasted nuts, orchard fruits and warm baking spices with a dry, spicy finish.
Walter B. Duffy
Honouring the man who entrusted Albert B. Blanton with leading the distillery, this blend of 10 and 14-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbons, bottled at 107 proof, showcases graham crackers, dried figs, raisins, oak and gentle spice.
Cove Spring
Named after the spring that supplied water to the original distillery, this uncut wheated Kentucky Straight Bourbon, bottled at 120.2 proof, delivers rich notes of red cherry, toasted coconut, sweet corn and oak.
Inspired by the Prohibition Era
The collection is presented in a custom wooden display case, with each 375ml bottle faithfully recreating the packaging and bottle designs used during Prohibition. Even the presentation boxes feature the traditional cut-out where doctors once attached the prescription required to legally purchase medicinal whiskey.
