Boann Distillery, nestled in County Meath, has proudly launched a trio of single pot still Irish whiskeys, marking the brand’s first worldwide release. This collection includes Marsala, Madeira, and Pedro Ximénez expressions, all under the distinguished Whistler whiskey brand of Boann.
Reviving Irish Whiskey Heritage
Boann’s founder and managing director, Pat Cooney, highlights the significance of this release: “This is the beginning of a journey to bring Irish whiskey back to where it once was, to a time when Ireland dominated the world whiskey market,” he stated. “Single pot still Irish whiskey is the quintessential Irish whiskey style, exclusive and sacred to Ireland.”
The Cooney family at Boann Distillery is dedicated to reviving the heritage laid down by Ireland’s lost distilleries. By distilling historic mashbills (recipes) with local ingredients and employing the latest technology, they aim to unite the past with the future of Irish whiskey distillation.
Award-Winning Base Spirit
The foundation for these three new releases is the same spirit that earned Boann the title of World’s Best New Make and Young Spirit at the 2021 World Whiskies Awards. This exceptional base spirit is now enhanced by various cask finishes to create distinct and unique profiles.
Distinctive Cask Finishes
- Pedro Ximénez Release: This expression was aged in casks sourced from Boann’s partner cooperage in Andalucía, Spain, some of which were previously part of a vintage Pedro Ximénez solera system. The result is a whiskey with rich, sweet flavors characteristic of this revered sherry.
- Madeira Expression: Aged in casks from Madeira house Justino’s, this whiskey offers a complex flavor profile with hints of dried fruit, nuts, and spices, showcasing the influence of the Madeira wine casks.
- Marsala Release: This whiskey began its journey in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in Marsala casks, imparting it with sweet, fruity notes and a rich, velvety texture.
A Proud Legacy
Pat Cooney added: “We are creating whiskeys of distinct character and provenance and are writing the next chapter in the fascinating story of single pot still Irish whiskey. It is a source of immense pride that in doing so, we have distilled the essence of the land around us.”

All three expressions are bottled at 47% ABV and are currently available for purchase through Boann’s website at a recommended retail price of €69.95.
