The Balvenie distillery has unveiled an exciting new series known as the Balvenie Fifty Collection, a trilogy of ultra-rare whiskies that will be released over the next three years. This limited-edition collection offers a unique opportunity for whisky connoisseurs, with just 125 bottles available for each edition.
The series kicks off with the First Edition, a single cask whisky aged in a refill European oak cask that was filled in 1973. This exceptional whisky not only reflects decades of maturation but also sets the foundation for the subsequent releases in the trilogy. The Second Edition, set to debut in 2025, will be a marriage of the First Edition with whisky aged in an American oak hogshead cask from 1973. The trilogy will conclude in 2026 with the Third Edition, which will blend the previous editions with a whisky aged in American oak from 1974.
The origins of the Fifty Collection trace back to 1973 when the legendary malt master David Stewart began laying down these special casks. Today, the torch has been passed to Kelsey McKechnie, who is curating this collection with an eye for exceptional craftsmanship and flavor.
Kelsey McKechnie shared her insights on the collection, stating, “Each edition in this series is a tribute to the artistry that has shaped our whisky over the last 50 years. The unique characteristics of these aged casks converge to create a truly extraordinary experience, setting a new standard in the rare whisky market.“
The First Edition is described as having Balvenie’s signature sweet honey notes, complemented by flavors of cassis, candied apricots, nutty spices, and a hint of citrus. This inaugural release will be available exclusively at Harrods starting August 7, 2024, with a broader global release through specialist retailers beginning on September 12, 2024.
As the Balvenie Fifty Collection unfolds, it promises to be a remarkable journey through the distillery’s rich heritage and continued commitment to excellence. Each release will offer collectors and enthusiasts a rare glimpse into the depths of time-honored whisky-making traditions.
