Ardbeg has announced the appointment of Bryony McNiven as its new Distillery Manager – making her the first woman in the modern age to lead production at the legendary Islay distillery.
An Islay native and daughter of an Ardbeg stillman, Bryony has spent her entire career immersed in the world of peaty whisky. From 1st January 2026, she will officially take the reins of production at the home of the world’s smokiest, peatiest malt.
Her appointment echoes history: nearly two centuries ago, sisters Margaret and Flora Macdougall – relations of distillery founder John Macdougall – became some of Scotland’s very first female distillers when they ran Ardbeg from 1853. Bryony now follows in their pioneering footsteps.
Bryony grew up just down the road from the distillery, where her father, Ruaraidh MacIntyre, worked as part of the production team for 35 years. Before studying chemistry at Glasgow University, she spent summers at Ardbeg – a formative experience that set her career path.
From there, she served as an Ardbeg brand ambassador in Sweden, before joining the Whisky Creation Team in Edinburgh. Working alongside Dr Bill Lumsden and Gillian Macdonald, she spent six years honing her skills in whisky making and innovation.
In 2018, Bryony returned to Islay as Visitor Centre Planner, welcoming guests and helping to shape the visitor experience. She also played a key role on Ardbeg’s sensory panel, directly influencing the creation of new releases. More recently, she became co-chair of the brand’s global fan community, the Ardbeg Committee, cementing her place at the heart of the Ardbeg story.

Taking over from outgoing Distillery Manager Colin Gordon, Bryony said:

The appointment comes during a landmark year for the distillery, which recently opened Ardbeg House – a new world-class whisky and hospitality experience on Islay. Both the appointment and the opening underline Ardbeg’s trailblazing spirit, combining respect for tradition with bold steps toward the future.
