A Remarkable 49-Year-Old Single Malt: The Rare Luminary No. 2 Auctioned at Sotheby’s

In our previous article about the release of Luminary No. 2, we mentioned the upcoming auction featuring The Rare 49 Year Old Single Malt. Today, we can finally reveal the sale price.

The creation of The Rare Luminary No2 is the result of an extraordinary collaboration between Melodie Leung from the prestigious design studio, Zaha Hadid Architects, and Master Whisky Maker, Gregg Glass. This exceptional alliance of artistry and taste has resulted in three decanters of 49-Year-Old Single Malt, with two housed within a magnificent glass sculpture. Initially matured in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks, The Rare was then finished with an exquisite blend of rare Port Colheita 1963, 30-year-old Apostoles sherry, and select Bourbon, culminating in a 1951 virgin oak hybrid cask, air-dried and hand-toasted by Gregg Glass himself.

THE MOST EXCLUSIVE LUMINARIES RELEASE TO DATE

Only one bottle of The Rare 2024 Edition was available for acquisition, with its decanter and accompanying sculpture auctioned at Sotheby’s and sold for £93,750 / $117,400*. All proceeds from this auction will be donated to the V&A Dundee, where a design proof will be displayed. Whisky aficionados will also have the unique chance to view one of these exquisite pieces at The Dalmore Distillery, offering a rare experience for fans of The Luminaries series.

SCULPTED TO PERFECTION

The Rare sculpture is composed of multiple layers of copper glass, cascading continuously to represent the intricate layers of aging and flavors developed in the whisky. This design, resembling an infinite loop with no discernible beginning or end, is a powerful expression of the unique distillation process that harmonizes perfectly with the whisky it contains.
