The Macallan Introduces ‘The Tree of Life’ Collection Inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh

The Macallan has unveiled a new two-part series of limited-edition single malts paying tribute to Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The collection, titled The Tree of Life, draws inspiration from Mackintosh’s 1902 stained-glass work The Spirit of the Rose and his deep connection with nature.

The first and rarer expression, The Tree of Life 46 Year Old, was drawn from two Sherry-seasoned oak casks filled in 1979 and bottled at 46.2% ABV. Just 112 Lalique decanters have been produced. The decanter features a crystal rose stopper and is housed in a sculptural presentation reflecting Mackintosh’s architectural style.

The whisky marks a turning point in Mackintosh’s life, when—at age 46—he left architecture to focus on art and nature. The expression is described as offering tropical fruits over smouldering peat, complex wood spice, and notes of antique oak.

The second release, The Macallan Art is the Flower, also pays homage to The Spirit of the Rose and is matured in Sherry-seasoned European oak. Bottled at 50.4% ABV, it presents notes of raisin, fig, polished oak, cherry, and almonds. It will be available from 6 May 2025 at the distillery and select luxury retailers.

The launch is accompanied by a series of short films exploring the links between nature, art, and whisky craftsmanship.
