Bottled at 44.6% ABV and limited to only 100 bottles worldwide, this ultra-rare expression reflects over half a century of patience, craftsmanship, and maturation. With a price tag of $46,500 in the US (£37,000 in the UK), The 51 stands as one of the most exclusive Glenrothes releases in history.
Glenrothes has taken an innovative approach to packaging by encasing each bottle in a bespoke Jesmonite shell, a non-toxic, water-based acrylic resin. To access the whisky, owners must break the shell with an included hammer, creating a one-of-a-kind fracture pattern unique to each unit. While official bottle images have yet to be revealed, this design choice ensures that every bottle is not only a whisky but also a personalized piece of art.
Master Whisky Maker Laura Rampling describes The 51 as a whisky where patience, nature, and craft align perfectly. Matured in two refill casks, this expression highlights Glenrothes’ signature complexity while showcasing the elegance that comes with long-term aging.
The whisky opens with succulent watermelon, perfumed peach kernels, fresh almonds, and delicate notes of rose oil, bergamot, black tea leaves, sandalwood, and fennel seeds. The palate delivers a luxurious sweetness, with flavors of ripe melon, rose water, Earl Grey tea, antique oak, and creamy, freshly peeled almonds. The finish is fragrant, soft, and velvety, leaving behind a lingering sweetness.
