Suntory has announced the release of Hibiki 40 Years Old, a blend of whiskies from the Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Chita distilleries, marking the company’s oldest blended Japanese whisky yet. Created by chief blender Shinji Fukuyo, this rare expression is celebrated for its harmonious balance of flavors, crafted from whiskies aged for over four decades.
Bottled at 43% ABV and priced at £33,150 (US$35,000), Hibiki 40 Years Old is set for limited release through select retailers in chosen markets.
The whisky is matured in a variety of casks, including mizunara Japanese oak, Spanish oak, and American oak, contributing to its layered complexity. Tasting notes highlight aromas of Japanese loquat, dry lemon peel, and clove, with flavors of acacia honey and dry fig on the palate, culminating in an aromatic, lingering finish.
According to Fukuyo, the whisky embodies the essence of time, evoking the tranquility of old temples and a nostalgic warmth. “I would like people to enjoy the pure aroma that has sharpened over the years; the tranquility of old temples and storehouses, and the nostalgic warm feeling that accompanies them,” he remarked.
To honor the craftsmanship behind the blend, Suntory collaborated with Japanese washi artist Eriko Horiki, who designed the intricate washi label featured on the Hibiki 40 Years Old packaging. The crystal glass bottle, adorned with traditional Japanese maki-e, mother-of-pearl inlay, and gold lacquer, reflects the brand’s deep-rooted heritage. Encased in a wooden box made from 12 types of Japanese wood, the design symbolizes the 12 months of the year.
Fukuyo also expressed his appreciation for the legacy left by previous generations of master blenders and distillers: “Working with unique and special whiskies aged over 40 years was an invaluable experience. The complexity and depth of the unblended whiskies reflect the passage of time, and it was my responsibility to honor and amplify these qualities.”
