Sotheby’s has announced The Great American Whiskey Collection, its first-ever live, single-owner auction dedicated exclusively to American whiskey — and one that is already being described as the most valuable collection of its kind ever to reach the market.
The landmark sale will take place at the Breuer Building on Madison Avenue and is estimated at $1.17–1.68 million, comprising 360 bottles across 320 lots drawn from a meticulously assembled private collection. The auction forms part of Visions of America, Sotheby’s week-long programme celebrating American art, objects and innovation in recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Built over many years by a single, highly disciplined collector, the collection brings together some of the rarest and most sought-after Bourbon and Rye whiskeys ever bottled. It includes private labels, exclusive single barrels and historic releases that are now virtually impossible to source — with several lots appearing at auction for the first time, and many making their Sotheby’s debut.
Spanning production dates as early as 1900, the collection is anchored by an extraordinary concentration of Old Rip Van Winkle bottlings, which account for the majority of its value. These are complemented by landmark releases from Old Fitzgerald, Red Hook Rye, Buffalo Trace, Michter’s and Wild Turkey. Sotheby’s currently holds the auction record for a post-Prohibition American whiskey at $125,000, and the leading lot in this sale is expected to challenge — or exceed — that figure.
At its core, the auction stands as a powerful statement of the Van Winkle legacy, offering the strongest representation of the family’s lineage ever presented under the hammer. Many of the Van Winkle single-barrel selections — bottled for iconic retailers and venues such as Sam’s, Binny’s, Blue Smoke, Delilah’s and Old Advocate — were produced in extremely limited quantities, with most consumed shortly after release. The surviving bottles represent both the artistry of their era and the resilience of American whiskey through periods of profound challenge.
Importantly, every bottle comes directly from the cellar of a single owner, stored for decades in a custom-built home bar, preserving both provenance and condition — a detail that will not be lost on serious collectors.
Auction highlights include:
- Old Rip Van Winkle 20 Year Old Single Barrel “Sam’s” (133.4 proof) – estimated $70,000–100,000; only 60 bottles produced and the highest-proof Van Winkle ever released
- Van Winkle 18 Year Old “Binny’s” (121.6 proof) – estimated $60,000–80,000; exclusive single-barrel bottling
- Very Very Old Fitzgerald “Blackhawk” 18 Year Old (121.0 proof) – estimated $50,000–80,000; private bottling for the Wirtz family
- LeNell’s Red Hook Rye, Barrels #1–4 – estimated $24,000–35,000 each; only 852 bottles produced across all four barrels
Alongside Van Winkle, the sale features historic Old Fitzgerald Blackhawk bottlings and rare releases from Buffalo Trace, Michter’s and Wild Turkey, forming a collection that reflects not only the pinnacle of American whiskey craftsmanship, but also the preservation of its cultural and communal history.
