The iconic Laphroaig Distillery from Islay has introduced the Strong Characters series, a new collection of limited-edition single malts, celebrating key individuals who played pivotal roles in the distillery’s history. The first release in the series pays tribute to Donald Johnston, one of Laphroaig’s co-founders.
Illustrated by Bill Bragg, who will continue to design the labels for the series, this first bottling honors the legacy of Johnston, who established the distillery with his brother Alexander in 1815. Johnston, who later bought out his brother, passed away in 1847 under tragic circumstances. His story is captured in both the whisky’s design and the accompanying booklet, bringing to life Laphroaig’s heritage.

The inaugural whisky in this series has been aged for 33 years in a mix of American oak barrels and European oak ex-sherry hogsheads, resulting in a complex flavor profile that balances fudge, honey, sourdough bread, sea spray, and peat smoke, with rich undertones of fruit cake and spice from the sherry casks.
Teddy Joseph, Laphroaig’s global brand ambassador, commented, “More and more whisky enthusiasts are looking to uncover not just the flavors, but the stories behind their favorite distilleries. Laphroaig’s history is filled with strong personalities, and the Strong Characters series allows us to celebrate those figures who helped shape our brand.“
Artist Bill Bragg added: “I’ve always started my work in black and white—it captures the rough elegance that reflects Laphroaig’s whisky. The story of Donald Johnston, who tragically died after falling into a vat at the distillery, is dramatic and unique, and I wanted to convey that through my artwork.“
The 33-year-old Strong Characters whisky (43.8% ABV) is priced at £960 and will be available at selected retailers starting 8 October.
Additionally, Laphroaig has opened a ballot on its official website, allowing enthusiasts the opportunity to purchase a bottle directly. The ballot is open for a limited time.
