Kavalan, known for its striking designs such as the Exclusive Year of the Dragon , has unveiled yet another masterpiece with the release of LÁN, which debuted at both the Hong Kong Whisky Live and the Korea Bar and Spirits Show. Whisky enthusiasts in Asia were among the first to experience this exceptional new expression. Following its Asian debut, Kavalan LÁN is set to captivate European audiences at Whisky Live Paris this September.
The first phase of the LÁN launch will target markets in the EU, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Canada. A second wave is expected to follow, bringing this floral whisky to all other countries where Kavalan is currently exported, ensuring that whisky lovers worldwide can enjoy this unique expression.
Kavalan CEO, Mr. Y. T. Lee, explained the inspiration behind this floral whisky, rooted in the award-winning “King Car Peach” orchid, exclusively cultivated by Kavalan’s parent company, King Car. “Our port-aged LÁN Whisky captures the delicate floral aromas of the King Car Peach orchid,” said Mr. Lee. “It offers a sophisticated blend of vanilla and roasted nuts, enriched by our signature STR technique using Vinho wine casks, resulting in a smooth, fruity profile with layers of caramel sweetness.“
Kavalan’s STR (shaving, toasting, and recharring) process, key to their success, allows for deeper penetration into the oak casks, unlocking rich, hidden flavors. This pioneering technique was integral in Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique winning the World’s Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards in 2015, further solidifying Kavalan’s commitment to excellence.
The LÁN whisky boasts a beautiful combination of vanilla notes from bourbon barrels and the nutty, floral aromas imparted by port casks. Kavalan’s STR process brings out a fruity caramelized sweetness, enhanced by dessert and nutty wood tones, resulting in a light and elegant overall flavor profile.
Tasting Notes:
Flavour: The whisky opens with orchid aromas, accompanied by hints of rose, jasmine, peony, and orange blossom. These floral notes are seamlessly balanced with creamy vanilla, chocolate, caramel, and refreshing honeydew melon and fruit gummies. The finish is marked by subtle hints of nuts and cinnamon, evoking the feeling of a distant forest.
Palate: On the palate, floral and fruity aromas intertwine with creamy and chocolatey notes, culminating in a long-lasting finish of nutty and cinnamon woody fragrances.
