Glencairn Glass creator Raymond Davidson brings Scotch Whisky legends back together to celebrate

Edinburgh, Scotland – Scotch whisky legends gathered last week at The Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh to celebrate a major milestone — the 25th anniversary of the Glencairn Glass, the world’s official whisky glass.

The intimate dinner, hosted by Raymond Davidson, founder of Glencairn Crystal and creator of the now-iconic Glencairn Glass, reunited some of the most influential figures in Scotch whisky, including Richard Paterson OBE (The Dalmore), David Stewart MBE (William Grant & Sons), John Ramsay (formerly of Edrington), and Charlie MacLean MBE (whisky writer and consultant). Each played a pivotal role in supporting Raymond’s vision during the glass’s creation 25 years ago.

The evening also paid tribute to the late Michael Jackson, the esteemed whisky writer and the first to endorse the Glencairn Glass. Jackson’s early encouragement and expertise were instrumental in shaping the glass’s global reputation. Other early supporters, including Robert Hicks (formerly of Allied Distillers, now Pernod Ricard), were remembered fondly during the celebration.

First conceived in 2000, the Glencairn Glass was born from Raymond Davidson’s desire to design a glass that would enhance both the aroma and flavour of whisky. With feedback from Scotland’s Master Blenders and whisky experts, the prototype evolved into what is now recognised as the definitive glass for whisky appreciation.

Since its launch at Whisky Live London, the Glencairn Glass has become a global icon, with over 50 million glasses sold across distilleries, bars, and homes worldwide — and more than 5 million purchased each year.

Over the years, the Glencairn Glass has received multiple awards, including:

  • 🏆 The Queen’s Award for Innovation (2006)
  • 🏆 The Queen’s Award for International Trade (2012 and 2017)
  • 🏆 Malt Advocate Industry Leader Award

Reflecting on the occasion, Raymond Davidson shared:

“When I first sketched the concept for the Glencairn Glass, I wanted to create something that truly brought out the best in whisky. The input from incredible Master Blenders, whisky friends and legends in the industry was invaluable – and it’s been a joy to celebrate with them again, 25 years on.”

Julie Trevisan-Hunter, Marketing Director at The Scotch Whisky Experience, added:

“Hosting this celebration was a true honour. Raymond, Paul, and Scott have been part of the whisky family for so long that it’s hard to imagine the industry without them. The Glencairn Glass fits perfectly with our mission to help the world fall in love with Scotch whisky.”

The dinner forms part of a wider series of 25th anniversary celebrations for Glencairn Crystal, the family-run business founded by Raymond over 40 years ago and now led by his sons Paul and Scott Davidson.
