Independent bottler East Asia Whisky Company has revealed a limited release of three 33-year-old Macallan single malt Scotch whiskies, presented in bespoke decanters crafted by Glencairn Crystal, a renowned Scottish glassware company.
The highlight of the collection is the Macallan Mizunara 33 Years Old 1990 Komorebi Edition, the third and final whisky in East Asia’s Macallan Mizunara series. This expression was distilled in 1990 and matured for 31 years in an ex-bourbon cask before receiving a finishing period in Japanese mizunara oak. Inspired by the Japanese concept of “komorebi,” which refers to sunlight filtering through trees, only 100 bottles of this whisky will be made available. The custom Glencairn decanter reflects this theme with a silver oak blossom branch engraved around the bottle.
The Komorebi Edition will be offered first at Bonhams Finest Whisky & Spirits online sale from 23rd September–3rd October, followed by a wider release through selected retailers in mid-October. Pricing is available upon request.
In addition, East Asia Whisky Company will release Macallan 33 Years Old Origins, a limited-edition set of two single malts also distilled in 1990. This duo, created in partnership with Ephemerus Concepts, showcases a “study in oak,” where both whiskies began aging in the same sherry cask. However, half of the whisky was transferred to a mizunara cask for a two-year finishing period. The set emphasizes the unique characteristics imparted by the different wood types.
Both whiskies are presented in matching Glencairn crystal decanters, engraved with a Pictish crescent and arrow symbol on one and a Japanese fan with cherry blossoms on the other, representing the heritage behind each bottling. The Macallan 33 Years Old Origins set will be launched via Bonhams in late October.
Christian Leusder, director of East Asia Whisky Company, commented on the collaboration with Glencairn: “The whisky spent years perfecting in these very rare casks. With such precious spirits, it is vital that they are housed in decanters worthy of them.” He praised Glencairn Crystal for its shared values of simplicity in design, attention to detail, and the pursuit of perfection.
