Douglas Laing Releases Rock Island 16 Year Old Sherry Edition

Independent blender, bottler, and distiller Douglas Laing has unveiled a new limited-edition Scotch whisky: Rock Island 16 Year Old Sherry Edition.

Following the 2023 release of the Rock Island 14 Year Old Sherry Edition, this latest expression continues the exploration of maritime blended malts with extended sherry cask maturation.

The new bottling is a blend of single malts from the whisky islands of Orkney, Arran, Jura, and Islay, each matured for 16 years, primarily in sherry casks. These hand-selected casks deepen the classic sweet, peated, and coastal character of Rock Island, enhancing it with aromas of dried fruits, walnut, and vanilla, alongside notes of honeycomb and roasted almonds.

Bottled at 46.8% ABV, the same strength as the 14-year-old release, the new edition invites direct comparison between the two vintages. True to Douglas Laing’s “as natural as it gets” philosophy, the whisky is non-chill filtered and natural in colour.

Presented in a foil-wrapped premium gift box, the packaging reflects a modern maritime identity – bold, yet rooted in the island spirit.

Chloé Wood, Rock Island Brand Manager, commented:

“Rock Island 16 Year Old is a release we’re particularly proud of. The brand combines a truly unique blend of single malts from some of Scotland’s most iconic whisky-producing islands. Showcasing this blend predominantly in sherry casks is a special moment, especially as it marks the first 16-year-old expression under the Rock Island name. The flavour profile – shaped by both the distillates and the chosen casks – delivers a whisky experience not to be missed. It’s a striking reminder of the importance of time and patience in whisky maturation.”

Rock Island 16 Year Old Sherry Edition is now available via specialist whisky retailers and selected online stores.

Tasting Notes
A multifaceted greeting from the Scottish coast – the signature sweet peat smoke and maritime influence are evident throughout. Aromas of dried fruit, walnut, and nutmeg set the tone, followed by malt and vanilla offering balance and depth. The long finish lingers with juicy honey and toasted almonds.
