Appleton Estate has unveiled its most aged expression ever: The Source 51 Year Old, a limited-edition Jamaican pot still rum aged for over five decades in the country’s tropical climate. Bottled at 62% ABV and limited to just 25 decanters, this historic release marks a milestone in the distillery’s 275-year legacy.
Distilled from estate-grown sugarcane, using open fermentation and traditional copper pot stills, The Source was laid down in a single American oak cask on 30 July 1973. Initially overseen by Master Blender Owen Tulloch, the ageing process was later guided by his successor, Dr. Joy Spence, the first female Master Blender in the spirits industry.
Named after the limestone-filtered aquifer that flows beneath the estate, The Source honours the water at the heart of every Appleton rum. This deep wellspring, nestled in Jamaica’s Nassau Valley, has long inspired Appleton’s distinct character and flavour profile.
As the longest tropically aged rum ever released, The Source showcases the richness that accelerated tropical maturation can produce—yielding profound depth, complexity, and natural colour.
Each decanter is a celebration of Jamaican craft. The heart-shaped crystal bottle transitions from rich mahogany tones into an aquamarine base, echoing the purity of the spring. Topped with a handcrafted copper Doctor Bird—Jamaica’s national symbol—it is housed in a turquoise case featuring a radial straw marquetry pattern inspired by pressed cane.
Dr. Joy Spence commented:
“Tasting this beautiful expression with Owen over 40 years ago sparked my lifelong passion for the possibilities of aged rum. This release is a tribute to the artistry, dedication, and spirit of our people—from the hand-harvested cane and traditional distillation to the stewardship of our barrels across generations. Jamaica and rum are inseparable, much like the heart and soul captured in The Source.”
Appleton Estate – The Source will be available from select retailers later this month, priced at $70,000 USD.
