Ian Macleod Distillers has officially opened Laggan Bay Distillery, marking the arrival of the 11th whisky distillery on Islay and a new long-term project for the family-owned business.
The first cask was filled on 2 April 2026 by Leonard Russell, alongside Tom Russell and Distillery Manager Malcolm Rennie, formally beginning production at the site.
Led by Rennie, an Islay native with extensive industry experience, the distillery has established a new local production team with a focus on creating a whisky defined by clarity of spirit and balanced flavour, rather than replicating existing regional styles.
Located overlooking Laggan Bay, the distillery takes direct influence from its coastal environment, with the Atlantic-facing site shaping both its identity and long-term approach. The area’s natural surroundings, including frequent sightings of bottlenose dolphins, are reflected in the distillery’s branding and positioning.
From the outset, the project incorporates a sustainability-focused design, including wetland systems for liquid waste management and plans to explore renewable energy solutions in collaboration with local partners.
The distillery is also positioned as an active contributor to the Islay community, with a focus on local employment and ongoing investment. Laggan Bay will participate in Fèis Ìle, opening to the public on 31 May 2026 as part of this year’s programme.
Leonard Russell stated that the project reflects a long-term vision, with the intention of developing a whisky shaped by location, people and production choices, while Malcolm Rennie highlighted the opportunity to create a new Islay single malt with a strong sense of place.
With the first cask now filled, Laggan Bay begins the process of establishing its identity, with further details on style, cask programme and future releases expected as the whisky matures.
